Key advantages

  • On-site replacement without removing the window
  • Economical compared with full replacement
  • Option to upgrade to Low-E
  • For broken, cracked and fogged glass
  • Suitable for PVC, aluminium and timber joinery

Glass replacement is a service that renews only the glass in windows and doors whose frames are still sound but whose glass is broken, cracked, fogged between the panes or poorly insulating. It is far more economical than replacing the whole window and is usually completed quickly.

When Is Glass Replacement Needed?

  • When the glass is broken or cracked.
  • When fog, droplets or stains appear between the panes of a double glazed unit.
  • When you want to improve the insulation of old single-glazed windows.
  • When upgrading standard double glazing to Low-E or laminated glass.
  • When switching to frosted or patterned glass in bathrooms or street-facing rooms.

How Is It Done?

Our team first inspects on site, checking the condition of the profile and sash, the depth of the glazing rebate and the existing glass thickness. Broken glass is removed safely and the rebate is measured to the millimetre. Once the new glass is produced, the beads are removed, the glass is positioned correctly on setting blocks and the beads are refitted. Gaskets are renewed if necessary. After glazing, the sash is readjusted so it opens and closes smoothly.

Advantages

  • Renewal without removing the window or any building work.
  • Economical compared with full window replacement.
  • Significant insulation gain with Low-E double glazing.
  • Quickly completed work.
  • Suitable for PVC, aluminium and timber joinery.

Pricing and Timing

Glass replacement is priced by glass type and square metre. For very small panes a minimum chargeable area applies because of production and labour costs. Producing the new glass usually takes a few working days; in the meantime the broken section can be temporarily covered. Fitting usually takes only a short time per window.

For Guesthouses and Holiday Homes

Frequently asked questions

No, in most cases you do not. Mist between the two panes shows that the glass unit has lost its seal; this cannot be fixed by wiping the glass. If the window frame and sash are sound, only the double glazed unit is remade to size and replaced. This is much more economical than replacing the whole window and is usually done in a few hours. During replacement you can also improve insulation by choosing low-E coated glass. After measuring, a new glass unit is made and on installation day the old glass is removed and the new one fitted.

Tempered glass is heat-treated to be much stronger than normal glass; when broken, it shatters into small blunt pieces instead of sharp shards. It is used in glass balconies, shower enclosures and door glazing. Laminated glass consists of two panes bonded with a special film; when broken, the pieces stay attached to the film. It is preferred where safety, impact resistance and sound insulation are needed, for example in homes near the airport or large panes close to floor level. Both glass types can also be combined in a single double glazed unit.
