A double-glazed glass balcony is an advanced system that uses insulated glass units, two tempered panes separated by an air or gas cavity, within thermally broken aluminium profiles instead of a single tempered pane. Because brush and rubber gaskets sit at the joints between panels, air tightness is much higher than in folding systems.
Where Is It Used?
It is ideal for those who want to use the balcony as part of the living room, as a work corner or seating area in winter. In Ortaca and Köyceğiz it keeps the balcony warm on damp, cool winter days; in summer, combined with solar control glass, it limits heat gain.
Advantages
- Significant heat savings in winter thanks to double glazing.
- High air and water tightness with gasketed panels.
- Less condensation and fogging.
- Better sound insulation against street noise.
- Folding or sliding opening options.
Technical Design
The glass units are usually made from 4+12+4 or 5+12+5 tempered glass. Profiles contain a polyamide thermal break that interrupts the heat bridge. Panels can move as a folding system or slide. Solar control or Low-E glass is recommended for south facades. Since double-glazed panels are heavier, tracks and rollers are reinforced.
Sizes and Installation
Panel width can be 60–90 cm and height up to 250 cm. In double-glazed systems it is important to insulate the ceiling and balustrade junctions too; otherwise heat escapes there. During installation, insulating tape is applied under the tracks and at the ceiling junction, and drainage is directed outward. Planning floor and ceiling insulation at the same time gives a much better result.
Maintenance
Checking the gaskets once a year, cleaning the tracks and adjusting the rollers is enough. Fogging on the inner surfaces of a glass unit shows that it has lost its seal; in that case only that unit is replaced.
