Laminated Safety Glass

Laminated safety glass with a PVB interlayer between two panes that does not shatter when broken. Provides safety and superior sound insulation for ground floors, shop fronts, balustrades and family homes.

Laminated Safety Glass – Ortaca

Key advantages

  • Does not shatter when broken
  • Resists forced entry
  • Sound insulation with PVB interlayer
  • Filters most UV rays
  • Can be used in double glazed units
  • Acoustic PVB option

Laminated safety glass is made by bonding two or more panes with one or more PVB (polyvinyl butyral) interlayers under heat and pressure. When the glass breaks, the fragments stay stuck to the interlayer instead of scattering, and the opening remains closed for a while. This gives important protection against both accidents and forced entry.

Where Is It Used?

Ground floor windows, shop fronts, glass sections of entrance doors, glass balustrades, roof and overhead glazing, children’s rooms and school buildings are the main applications. It is often chosen for security on ground floor facades facing gardens in villas in Dalyan and for businesses in Ortaca’s market area.

Advantages

  • Does not shatter when broken, reducing the risk of injury.
  • Resists forced entry; the opening stays closed even if the glass breaks.
  • Noticeable sound insulation thanks to the PVB interlayer.
  • Filters most UV rays, reducing fading.
  • Can be combined with insulation inside a double glazed unit.

Technical Information

The most common laminated build-ups are 3+3 (33.1), 4+4 (44.1) and 5+5 (55.1); the digit after the point shows the number of PVB layers. As the required security level rises, the number of PVB layers and glass thickness increase. Acoustic PVB raises sound insulation further and is recommended for homes near main roads or entertainment venues. Laminated glass can be used as the outer and/or inner pane of a double glazed unit, for example 44.1 + 16 + 4 Low-E.

Sizes and Installation

Laminated glass is heavier than ordinary glass, so sash and hinge capacity is checked during the survey. During installation the glass is carried on setting blocks and fixed with glazing beads. For glass balustrades and overhead glazing, thickness is chosen according to engineering calculations and supporting profiles are selected accordingly.

Maintenance

Laminated glass is cleaned like ordinary glass. Keeping its edges out of prolonged contact with water extends the life of the PVB layer, so correct installation and drainage are important. Broken laminated glass is measured on site and replaced quickly.

Frequently asked questions

No, in most cases you do not. Mist between the two panes shows that the glass unit has lost its seal; this cannot be fixed by wiping the glass. If the window frame and sash are sound, only the double glazed unit is remade to size and replaced. This is much more economical than replacing the whole window and is usually done in a few hours. During replacement you can also improve insulation by choosing low-E coated glass. After measuring, a new glass unit is made and on installation day the old glass is removed and the new one fitted.

Tempered glass is heat-treated to be much stronger than normal glass; when broken, it shatters into small blunt pieces instead of sharp shards. It is used in glass balconies, shower enclosures and door glazing. Laminated glass consists of two panes bonded with a special film; when broken, the pieces stay attached to the film. It is preferred where safety, impact resistance and sound insulation are needed, for example in homes near the airport or large panes close to floor level. Both glass types can also be combined in a single double glazed unit.
