Roller Shutters: Sun, Security and Privacy

In and around Ortaca the summer sun heats west-facing facades considerably, especially in the afternoon. A shutter fitted outside the window stops sunlight before it reaches the glass, so it prevents the interior from heating up far more effectively than curtains and blinds used inside. A closed shutter also adds an extra layer of security, reduces street noise and gives complete darkness in bedrooms, preventing early wake-ups on summer mornings.

How Does a Roller Shutter Work?

An aluminium roller shutter is a curtain of interlocking aluminium slats filled with polyurethane foam. The slats move within vertical guides on both sides of the window and, when raised, wind around a tube inside the box above the window. The shutter can be operated by strap, crank handle or electric motor.

Types of Roller Shutters

  • Motorised shutter: controlled by wall switch, remote or smartphone; can run automatically with timers and sensors.
  • Manual strap shutter: an economical solution for light, small windows.
  • Manual crank shutter: needs less effort than a strap on heavier, wider shutters.

Box Types

The shutter box can be surface-mounted outside or, in new buildings, concealed within the wall. In existing buildings the most common solution is a round or square aluminium box mounted outside at the top of the window. In new builds, box systems produced together with the PVC window give a neater look. To choose the right box, the lintel height above the window and the facade structure are examined during the survey.

Security Shutters for Businesses

An aluminium security shutter is a wider, more robust version of the roller shutter. It is used for shop fronts, warehouse doors, garages and café-restaurant facades. It provides security for shops in Ortaca’s market area and for seasonal businesses in Dalyan during the winter closure. Security shutters are usually motorised; with perforated slats the shop window stays visible when closed.

Benefits of Shutters in a Hot Climate

Partly closing shutters during the day in south and west facing rooms clearly lowers indoor temperature and lets the air conditioner run less. Ventilation slots between the slats allow some air and light through even when the shutter is down. In holiday homes left empty for long periods, closed shutters are a great advantage for security and sun protection. With motorised systems, timers can also make the home look occupied.

Survey, Measuring and Installation

During the free survey the window size, space for the box, access to power and the surface for fixing the guides are checked. For motorised systems the electrical connection is planned with the installation. Installation usually takes a short time per window, and we show you how to use the system.

Maintenance

Cleaning the guides once a year and lightly lubricating them with silicone spray, plus wiping the slats with soapy water, is enough. Near the sea, cleaning twice a year is recommended to prevent salt build-up. Our service team handles strap, crank or motor faults on site.

Upgrading an Existing Shutter

Before removing your old plastic shutters, we check the condition of the box and guides. Where the box is sound, only the slats may need replacing with aluminium, or a strap-operated shutter can be converted to motorised operation. This gives an economical upgrade without touching the facade.

Frequently asked questions about Roller Shutters and Security Shutters

Yes. Retrofitted shutters use systems with an external box mounted on the outer face of the window or above the window opening, so the window does not need to be removed. Strap-operated, manual crank and motorised options are available. During the survey we check the wall area above the window, the opening direction and whether it will be used together with an insect screen. In new buildings, the shutter box can be planned together with the frames for a cleaner look. Insulated shutter boxes are chosen so that they do not cause heat loss.
