Roller Insect Screen

A roller insect screen that winds up into a cassette above the window when not in use. An elegant solution that keeps the window looking clean and opens and closes easily with a spring mechanism.

Roller Insect Screen – Ortaca

Key advantages

  • Rolls into a cassette and hides when not in use
  • Mesh protected inside the cassette
  • Easy use with spring mechanism
  • Side guides resist the wind
  • Keeps the window looking clean
  • Vertical and horizontal models

A roller insect screen is a system in which the mesh is wound around a spring-loaded tube inside a cassette fitted at the top of the window. When you pull the handle down, the mesh slides down in side guides and locks at the bottom; when you release the lock, the spring winds it back into the cassette in a controlled way.

Where Is It Used?

It is ideal for those who want a screen only in summer and prefer a fully clear window in winter. It is often chosen for windows with a view, holiday homes and upper windows of shop fronts. In homes with a view in Göcek and Dalyan, rolling the screen into the cassette in winter leaves the view completely open.

Advantages

  • Completely hidden when not in use.
  • Mesh is protected in the cassette and less affected by sun and dust.
  • Easy opening and closing with a spring mechanism.
  • Side guides keep the mesh in place in the wind.
  • Elegant design that does not spoil the window’s look.

Sizes and Installation

Roller screens are usually made vertically up to 160 cm wide and 200 cm high; horizontally operating roller models are also available for doors. They can be mounted on the inside or outside of the window frame or within the wall opening. About 4–5 cm of space is needed at the top for the cassette; on windows with a shutter box this is checked during the survey.

Care

Letting the mesh roll back in a controlled way extends the life of the spring mechanism; it should never be allowed to snap back. The inside of the side guides should be cleaned from time to time. If spring tension weakens over time, our service team can adjust it. In homes with pets, a hinged screen with pet mesh is a more durable choice than a roller screen.

Who Is It For?

For users who open and close the window often, want to use the screen only in the evening and do not want an extra sash in front of the window, a roller screen is the most elegant choice. On high floors with very strong winds, a hinged system may be a sturdier alternative.

With a free survey and measurement we assess on site whether a roller screen can be fitted to your window.

Frequently asked questions

A pleated screen opens and folds sideways thanks to its accordion-like mesh; it suits wide balcony and terrace doors and is almost invisible when not in use. A hinged screen is a framed leaf that opens and closes like a door; with spring hinges it can close by itself and is more durable on frequently used kitchen or garden doors. For windows, hinged or fixed screens are usually preferred. During the survey we recommend the most suitable model based on opening direction and frequency of use.

A pet screen uses a special mesh with thicker fibres and a tighter weave that resists pets’ claws much better. Normal mesh tears quickly when a cat or dog climbs it, while pet mesh withstands this strain for much longer. It is usually used on garden doors and lower window sections that pets can reach. If needed, an extra protective panel can be added to the lower part of a door screen. It looks slightly darker and more visible than normal mesh.

Yes. If the screen’s frame, hinges and mechanism are sound, only the mesh can be replaced. This is more economical than renewing the whole screen. For pleated screens, the mesh and cords work as a unit, so replacement is assessed according to the condition of the mechanism. We sometimes replace mesh on site and sometimes take the screen to the workshop. During the visit we check the frame and tell you honestly whether repair or renewal makes more sense. If you have pets, you can also choose pet mesh when replacing it.

Not with the right model. On inward-opening uPVC windows the screen is fitted outside or onto the frame, so you can open and close the sash freely. For outward-opening or sliding windows, a pleated, sliding or hinged screen is chosen according to how the sash moves. Details such as the handle, shutter box and sill are checked during the survey. The aim is that you can use the window for ventilation and cleaning without problems while the screen is fitted. If needed, the hinge side of the screen is also set according to the sash opening direction.

Usually not. Pleated and sliding screens can be folded away when not in use, so they can stay in place all year. Hinged and fixed screens can also remain fitted in winter; however, on facades very close to the sea or exposed to strong winds, removing and storing them if they will not be used all winter can extend their life. In either case, cleaning the mesh with a soft brush and water once or twice a year and keeping tracks and hinges free of dust is enough maintenance.
